Elspinhope, Ettrick Valley, Ettrick, Selkirk, Scottish Borders

Elspinhope is a self-catering holiday cottage sleeping up to four guests, set in one of the most beautiful locations in the Scottish Borders. The cottage provides an ideal base for those seeking a peaceful “get away from it all” break, surrounded by the fresh air, tranquillity and unspoilt scenery of the upper Ettrick Valley.

About Elspinhope

This environmentally friendly cottage is located on Cossarshill Farm, a 1,400-acre hill sheep farm situated beside the Southern Upland Way long-distance walking route. Guests have freedom of access to the land, with many wonderful walks across the hills and along the river. The owners are keen conservationists and are actively involved in projects across the farm, including dry stone dyking and planting native woodland.

Cossarshill lies within an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA), and visitors frequently spot wildlife including badgers, bats, brown hares, deer, foxes and otters, along with a wide variety of bird species, both large and small.

Outside the cottage, a post-and-rail fence encloses the garden area, which includes a picnic table. A path and steps lead down to the Cossarshill Burn, where there are seats beside rocky pools and a waterfall.

The aim at Elspinhope is to provide accommodation that feels like a true home from home. Every window enjoys enviable views, allowing guests to sit back and take in the surrounding scenery and birdlife without leaving their chair or bed. The cottage is thoughtfully furnished and decorated with comfort in mind.

Cottage amenities include:

  • Double bedroom

  • Twin bedroom with en suite facilities

  • Bathroom with shower over

  • Well-equipped kitchen

  • Large sitting/dining room with 55” wall-mounted TV (streaming services available using guests’ own passwords)

  • Mobile phone coverage

  • Utility room with washing machine, dryer, ironing facilities and clothes drying area

From the dining area, sliding French windows open onto the garden, offering views down to the Cossarshill Burn and across rolling open hills beyond. Wild swimming is also possible nearby.

Bed linen is included within the room rate. Towels are available for hire and can be requested at the time of booking.

The woodland surrounding Elspinhope is rich with wildflowers, rare butterflies and red squirrels. Atlantic salmon can be seen in the pool below the cottage during autumn, and the area offers a wonderful swimming spot in summer. Guests can step straight outside to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Ettrick landscape or explore the historic Border towns and places of interest nearby. Wildlife cameras around the grounds allow guests to observe the local fauna, including sightings of rare Scottish mammals.

Visiting Ettrick Valley & Exploring the Scottish Borders

The Ettrick Valley is recognised as one of the most ecologically interesting areas in Scotland. Mammals recorded locally include otters, badgers, foxes, deer and red squirrels.
