Ynysfaen Camping & Glamping, Trecastle, Brecon, Powys


This small, family-run campsite is located just two miles from Trecastle and around 20 minutes west of Brecon, set within the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park, now recognised as one of the world’s Dark Sky Reserves. The charming old farmhouse sits within five acres of peaceful countryside, creating a picturesque and tranquil setting.

Shepherd’s Hut
The bespoke, dog-free shepherd’s hut, beautifully handcrafted in Wales, offers a cosy and private retreat for two adults, ideal for short breaks or longer stays. It features a separate, fully equipped enclosed kitchen with a gas hob, fridge, cooking essentials, seating area and a wood burner for added comfort. Guests can dine indoors or outside and enjoy a private enclosed garden with outdoor seating. Bedding, towels, electricity and initial supplies of wood and charcoal are all included for a relaxing stay.

Ynysfaen Cabin
The handmade one-bedroom cabin provides a cosy and well-equipped space, featuring a kitchenette with a hob, microwave and essential utensils, along with tea and coffee provided. The bedroom includes a comfortable double bed, while the living area has a sofa bed, allowing accommodation for up to four guests, making it ideal for families or friends. An electric radiator and log burner ensure comfort during cooler months. Outside, a private decking area with a fire pit and BBQ offers a perfect place to unwind. The cabin also includes a storage shed and a daily electricity allowance, with additional usage available if required. Pets are welcome by arrangement, with space for up to two medium-sized dogs.

Empty Bell Tent
The 5-metre empty bell tent offers a simple, back-to-basics camping experience for up to four guests. It does not include electricity or cooking facilities, but guests have access to on-site showers, toilets, a fridge and washing facilities, as well as picnic benches for outdoor dining. Please note that pets are not permitted in the bell tent, and there is no power, Wi-Fi or mobile phone reception on site.

The site also offers four campervan pitches and additional camping pitches for tents.

Visiting the Area
Cwmwysg, near Trecastle, is perfectly positioned for exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Visitors can enjoy scenic walks to Llyn y Fan Fach and Llyn y Fan Fawr beneath the Black Mountain peaks or take on Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales. The nearby market town of Brecon offers independent shops, cafés and access to the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, ideal for gentle walks and cycling. With waterfalls, open moorland and exceptional dark skies for stargazing, the area offers a perfect blend of adventure and tranquillity.

Ty Gwenyn is set within its own private area and offers a unique stay in an original Quaker’s carriage that has been thoughtfully modernised. Inside, there is a double bed with a memory foam mattress, a toilet and sink, a small kitchen area with a hob and mini oven, an original Belfast sink and a cosy bench seating area. Modern conveniences include heating, hot water, plug sockets, lighting, USB ports, a smart TV and Wi-Fi. Outside, guests can relax on the private patio with seating for two and enjoy evenings around the large fire pit.

Ty Olwyn Bach – Sleeps 2
Ty Olwyn Bach is a charming shepherd’s hut offering a well-designed and comfortable space. It features a two-bench seating area that converts into a fold-down double bed, a dining area for two and a stylish shower room. The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave grill, ceramic hob, air fryer, toaster, kettle, fridge freezer and all necessary crockery. Lôn Lodges, Nantmel, Rhayader, Powys

Accommodation

Refurbished to an exceptionally high standard, Kilsby Cottage offers wonderful views from every room. The sitting and dining area is furnished with comfortable cane seating and includes a flat-screen digital TV, video player, DVD player, stereo CD player and radio. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, although Freesat TV reception is not currently provided.

The fully equipped kitchen includes an electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave, health grill, slow cooker and fridge-freezer, ensuring everything needed for a self-catering stay is on hand. The spacious shower room includes an automatic washing machine, and an iron and ironing board are also provided.

Upstairs, the cottage offers one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, with an additional fold-up bed or travel cot available on request. Each bedroom includes bedside lockers, a recessed double wardrobe, a dressing table and a hairdryer. The cottage comfortably accommodates up to four adults, with the option of hosting a fifth adult for a small additional charge.
The upstairs shower room features an extra-large walk-in shower cubicle fitted with grip rails and a removable seat, along with a sink, toilet and a recess for the washing machine.

Kilsby Cottage is fully double-glazed and centrally heated, with individually controlled radiators to ensure comfort during cooler months. A highchair is available on request.

Outdoors, guests benefit from secure off-road parking, a private seating area and access to the gardens at the front and side of the main house, where panoramic views of the upper Irfon Valley can be enjoyed. Barbecue equipment and outdoor furniture are provided, and several secluded seating spots can be found throughout the garden. Numerous bird feeders attract a wide range of species, and lucky visitors may even spot pied flycatchers nesting in the boxes.

Visiting the Area

Although peacefully situated, the cottage is within easy reach of the town’s amenities, including two restaurants, three pubs, several shops and a petrol station. Many attractions are nearby, such as Abergwesyn Common, Hereford Cathedral, the Roman Gold Mines and Wyeside Arts Centre.

Madog’s Wells is set within eight acres of beautiful countryside, surrounded by peaceful woodland walks and abundant wildlife. It is an ideal location for birdwatching, walking or touring Mid Wales, with guests even able to observe birds from the breakfast table.

About the Cottages

Both self-catering units are well equipped, offering ample cooking utensils, china, cutlery, flat-screen Sky TV, DVD players, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and first aid kits. Heating, bedding, linen, some towels, tea towels and utilities are all included in the price.

There is ample parking, and each cottage has its own patio area furnished with tables and chairs. Guests also have access to a rotary clothesline with pegs and washing machines. A travel cot and high chair are available on request.
