Garth Barns and Country House, Llanidloes, Powys

Yoga Retreat

Hidden in 200 acres of organic meadows, woodland and streams just two miles from the friendly market town of Llanidloes, Garth Barns & Country House has become a sought-after venue for yoga, meditation and wellness retreats. Come and breathe the pure Mid-Wales air, wild-swim in the private lake and practise yoga in complete peace, surrounded by rolling green hills and birdsong.

The heart of every retreat is the purpose-built yoga shala: an oak-floored studio in Hafod Barn with under-floor heating from the estate’s biomass boiler, floor-length linen drapes and French windows that open onto the garden for indoor-outdoor sessions in warm weather. Mats, blocks and blankets can be provided for a small supplement, while an adjoining lounge and WC keep everything self-contained.

Accommodation is spread across three stylish conversions. Hafod Barn and Ty Nant flank a landscaped courtyard with pond and stream, and Garth Country House adds period charm; together they offer 18 bedrooms (16 en-suite) and can sleep anything from a cosy group of eight up to 50 guests, making the venue ideal for yoga and wellness breaks, teacher trainings, corporate wellbeing breaks or large themed retreats. Fibre-optic Wi-Fi, wood-burners with logs supplied, and spacious kitchens ensure modern comfort alongside rustic character.

Between classes guests can explore miles of way-marked farm trails, take a guided hike along Glyndŵr’s Way, sweat it out in the gym and Finnish sauna, or plunge into the clear spring-fed lake for wild swimming and canoeing. Evenings often end around the camp-fire in the orchard or star-gazing from the terrace – the dark skies here are spectacular.

Catering is flexible: each building has a fully equipped kitchen but most retreat leaders opt to hire one of Garth’s recommended chefs for plant-based or Ayurvedic menus adapted to individual dietary needs. Dining can be arranged family-style for up to eighty guests in Hafod’s “big space”, which also transforms into a candle-lit practice room for restorative or yin sessions after dark.

The venue prides itself on eco-credentials, drawing water from a spring, heating with biomass and solar and farming the surrounding land sustainably so wildflowers, red kites and otters thrive. With rail links via Caersws station (eight miles) and Birmingham International just two hours away, retreats here feel wonderfully remote yet remain surprisingly accessible.
