The Slap, Ruemuera, Burray, Orkney


The Slap is a tastefully restored 19th century croft house offering self-catering holiday accommodation on a working croft at Ruemuera on the southern Orkney island of Burray. The holiday home is surrounded by acres of croft land and enjoys beautiful views across Scapa Flow, the Churchill Barriers and the island of Copinsay. It provides a welcoming setting for families, with children invited to see the animals and collect eggs in the morning.

About The Slap

The cottage has been carefully decorated and furnished throughout to provide guests with a comfortable home-from-home experience. Original Orkney flagstone floors with underfloor heating add character and warmth, while the cottage also includes a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom and a double bedroom.

The living area features a small double sofa bed, allowing the property to accommodate up to four guests in total.

Local Area

Burray is connected to the main island of Orkney by road across the spectacular Churchill Barriers, creating one of the most scenic drives in the area. Along the way visitors can see the historic block ships that were sunk during the two World Wars.

The Orkney Isles are a stunning collection of islands known for their spectacular scenery and rich history. Burray lies just north of South Ronaldsay, the southernmost of the Orkney islands, with the two islands connected by the fourth Churchill Barrier.

Scapa Flow is recognised as one of the best diving sites in the world, and diving courses can be arranged for beginners wishing to experience it for the first time. After a day of exploring, visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along one of the many sandy beaches and admire the clear blue seas.

Harsgeir View Cottage, located in the peaceful village of Hacklete on Great Bernera, offers stunning views over West Loch Roag and Harsgeir Island. The cottage accommodates up to four guests, featuring one double bedroom and one twin room. Inside, the cottage is equipped with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. These include a wood-burning stove, dishwasher, home laundry facilities, microwave, coffee maker, ceramic hob cooker, fridge freezer, oil central heating, and full double glazing. The floors are laid with wood laminate throughout, complemented by rugs in each room to add warmth and comfort.

Entertainment is provided with a flat-screen TV, DVD player, phone line, Freeview, and a CD player. The kitchen is fully stocked with crockery, cooking utensils, and all the essentials needed for self-catering. Bed linen and towels are supplied for guests, and fire extinguishers and alarms are fitted as standard for safety.

In keeping with modern eco-conscious practices, the cottage is heated using a new Eco Dan air source heat pump, ensuring a minimal carbon footprint, which adds to the cottage’s appeal for environmentally-minded visitors.

Greenwell Cottage, Burray, Orkney


Greenwell Cottage is a single-storey early 20th century renovated farming croft, situated in 52 acres of arable farmland, with its own private beach and pier on the very peaceful north-western coast of the island of Burray, Orkney.

The holiday cottage boasts magnificent views overlooking the waters of the famous Scapa Flow. Ideal for the artist, water sport enthusiast (kayaking, canoeist, diver, swimmer, fishing etc...) or for just that peaceful break away from the hustle and bustle of life.

The self-catering cottage is adjoined to Greenwell, which is a working croft and lived in by the owners, Josie and Eddy. It provides all home comforts to ensure that you have a very enjoyable stay. A small welcome pack is provided on arrival, which includes tea, coffee, milk, sugar and biscuits. The facilities in the cottage include, heat by air-to-air heaters in each room and an electric fire, if needed. It has a fully equipped kitchen, including a calor gas cooker, electric oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

The bathroom has a shower over the bath. The lounge has a two-piece suite and TV. The breakfast room and large conservatory have spectacular views of Scapa Flow which is 30m away. To the rear of the cottage is a large conservatory filled with flowers and plants, overlooking a large split-level garden with a washing line. To the front of the house is a large outside decked area with table and chairs. Sadly, there is no internet for 2022 but this will be available from 2023.

Burray has a small village with a local shop, café and hotel that serves meals daily. To the south of Burray, across Number 4 Causeway and the beautiful long white sandy beach is the island of South Ronaldsay and the village of St Margarets Hope. The village includes a doctor’s surgery, church, café, grocery stores and the Pentland Ferry terminal from Gills Bay, Scotland. This village/ferry is 5 miles drive to and from the cottage.

To the north of Burray and crossing the remaining three causeway’s, the famous blockships sunk in the war and the Italian chapel, is the Orkney mainland. The royal burgh of Kirkwall lies 11 miles from Burray and is a lively and busy town with supermarkets, chemists, a leisure centre/swimming pool, cinema, theatre, post office, petrol station, vets and many pubs serving local alcoholic produce The Kirkwall airport (KOI) is approximately 11 miles from the cottage.
