The Slap is a tastefully restored 19th century croft house offering self-catering holiday accommodation on a working croft at Ruemuera on the southern Orkney island of Burray. The holiday home is surrounded by acres of croft land and enjoys beautiful views across Scapa Flow, the Churchill Barriers and the island of Copinsay. It provides a welcoming setting for families, with children invited to see the animals and collect eggs in the morning.

About The Slap

The cottage has been carefully decorated and furnished throughout to provide guests with a comfortable home-from-home experience. Original Orkney flagstone floors with underfloor heating add character and warmth, while the cottage also includes a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom and a double bedroom.

The living area features a small double sofa bed, allowing the property to accommodate up to four guests in total.

Local Area

Burray is connected to the main island of Orkney by road across the spectacular Churchill Barriers, creating one of the most scenic drives in the area. Along the way visitors can see the historic block ships that were sunk during the two World Wars.

The Orkney Isles are a stunning collection of islands known for their spectacular scenery and rich history. Burray lies just north of South Ronaldsay, the southernmost of the Orkney islands, with the two islands connected by the fourth Churchill Barrier.

Scapa Flow is recognised as one of the best diving sites in the world, and diving courses can be arranged for beginners wishing to experience it for the first time. After a day of exploring, visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along one of the many sandy beaches and admire the clear blue seas.

Greenwell Cottage, Burray, Orkney


Greenwell Cottage is a single-storey early 20th century renovated farming croft, situated in 52 acres of arable farmland, with its own private beach and pier on the very peaceful north-western coast of the island of Burray, Orkney.

The holiday cottage boasts magnificent views overlooking the waters of the famous Scapa Flow. Ideal for the artist, water sport enthusiast (kayaking, canoeist, diver, swimmer, fishing etc...) or for just that peaceful break away from the hustle and bustle of life.

The self-catering cottage is adjoined to Greenwell, which is a working croft and lived in by the owners, Josie and Eddy. It provides all home comforts to ensure that you have a very enjoyable stay. A small welcome pack is provided on arrival, which includes tea, coffee, milk, sugar and biscuits. The facilities in the cottage include, heat by air-to-air heaters in each room and an electric fire, if needed. It has a fully equipped kitchen, including a calor gas cooker, electric oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

The bathroom has a shower over the bath. The lounge has a two-piece suite and TV. The breakfast room and large conservatory have spectacular views of Scapa Flow which is 30m away. To the rear of the cottage is a large conservatory filled with flowers and plants, overlooking a large split-level garden with a washing line. To the front of the house is a large outside decked area with table and chairs. Sadly, there is no internet for 2022 but this will be available from 2023.

Burray has a small village with a local shop, café and hotel that serves meals daily. To the south of Burray, across Number 4 Causeway and the beautiful long white sandy beach is the island of South Ronaldsay and the village of St Margarets Hope. The village includes a doctor’s surgery, church, café, grocery stores and the Pentland Ferry terminal from Gills Bay, Scotland. This village/ferry is 5 miles drive to and from the cottage.

To the north of Burray and crossing the remaining three causeway’s, the famous blockships sunk in the war and the Italian chapel, is the Orkney mainland. The royal burgh of Kirkwall lies 11 miles from Burray and is a lively and busy town with supermarkets, chemists, a leisure centre/swimming pool, cinema, theatre, post office, petrol station, vets and many pubs serving local alcoholic produce The Kirkwall airport (KOI) is approximately 11 miles from the cottage.

We are ideal for children and they are welcome to see the animals and collect eggs in the morning.

Our holiday home has been tastefully decorated and furnished throughout to ensure guests have a home from home that they will want to return to time and time again. There are genuine Orkney flagstone floors with underfloor heating, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and a double bedroom. A small double sofa bed in the living area to sleep 2, catering for 4 guests in total.

Burray is connected by road over the spectacular Churchill Barriers to the main island of Orkney, making this one of the most beautiful drives you will take, past the historic blockships, sunk during the two world wars. The Orkney Isles are a beautiful collection of islands where you will find some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. We are located in Burray which can be found to the north of South Ronaldsay, the southernmost of the Orkney islands, these two islands are connected by the fourth Churchhill barrier. Scapa Flow is one of the best diving sites in the world. Diving courses can be arranged for the first time diver. To finish off a hectic day of sightseeing, take a relaxing stroll along with one of the many sandy beaches and admire the crystal clear blue seas.

Greenwell Cottage offers charming self-catering accommodation in Burray. It is set in a stunning location in 25 acres of arable farmland and boasts breathtaking views over the waters of Scapa Flow. We are perfect for an idyllic break in Orkney.

The cottage is only 100ft from the sea with a private slipway for canoeists and kayaking. Our cottage is truly ideal for the ultimate coastal holiday.

The cottage comes with a well-equipped kitchen including a Calor gas cooker, small electric oven, washing machine, dryer, microwave and fridge freezer. You can unwind in the lounge which comes with a TV and DVD player. A dining room is also available. The large conservatory/sun lounge enjoys breathtaking views over Scapa Flow. You can also savour stunning views outside on the decking area.

Two comfortable bedrooms are available: a double and one large room with four single beds. All the bedrooms share a bathroom with a shower over the bath.

Burray is a small island with gorgeous beaches and pretty bays, making it great for water sports, including canoeing, waterskiing, sailing, swimming and diving. The village is over a mile from the cottage and comes with a restaurant/pub, hotel and local shop. The nearby village of St Margaret’s Hop has a church, post office and nine-hole golf course.

The Royal Borough of Kirkwall is over 11 miles from the cottage and boasts lots of shops, hotels, restaurants and recreational facilities. Excellent attractions to see include St Magnus Cathedral, Bishop/Earls Palace, Tomb of the Eagles, Tomb of the Otters and the Standing Stones & Maesowe.
