Nantcol, Llanbedr, Snowdonia, Gwynedd

Nantcol – A Historic Welsh Longhouse Retreat in Snowdonia
Nantcol is a remarkable 14th-century Welsh longhouse nestled high on the mountainside at 1,000 feet, offering awe-inspiring views of the Rhinog Mountains and the Drws Ardudwy Pass. Situated at the far end of the dramatic and remote Nantcol Valley, this self-catering holiday home lies in a secluded yet accessible setting within the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Aptly described as "where the garden reaches to the sky," this unique retreat offers guests breathtaking scenery and a profound sense of peace.

An Authentic Longhouse with Centuries of Heritage
Constructed from rugged granite stone and boasting massive wooden rafters, Nantcol dates back to at least the year 1300. True to its original longhouse design, it was built as one continuous structure that traditionally sheltered both the family and livestock. The large, now-converted farmhouse kitchen once served as the cattle byre, with hay stored above in what is today the spacious hayloft bedroom.

The property’s historical charm is complemented by modern comforts:

A generous ground-floor living room features both an open fire and a multi-fuel stove.

The fully equipped farmhouse kitchen includes a vast wooden table that has been part of the house for over 200 years, mirroring the traditional style found in neighbouring farmsteads.

An ancient stable door opens to the garden and provides access to a second WC.

Sleeping Arrangements
Accessed via a staircase from the drawing room, the upper floor comprises:

One large double bedroom.

One twin bedroom.

A family bathroom with WC.

A spacious hayloft bedroom with three single beds and a cot, which also enjoys its own exterior stone staircase leading to a separate WC and garden.

Furnishings & Outdoor Space
Nantcol is tastefully decorated with authentic Welsh antiques, including an elegant dresser displaying local Welsh china. Large rugs warm the traditional tiled floors, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

Outside, the property includes:

A stone terrace (formerly the old bakehouse) that looks out across the dramatic Rhinog landscape.

A stone barn, coal shed, and a charming children’s playhouse repurposed from the old pigsty.

Ample parking and a large grassy play area for children.

Perfect for Exploring North Wales
Ideally situated for exploring Gwynedd and beyond, Nantcol is within easy reach of the renowned castles of North Wales—including Harlech, Caernarfon, Beaumaris, and Criccieth. Guests can also enjoy the unspoiled sandy beaches of Shell Island and Harlech or spend endless days walking in Snowdonia National Park, with routes suitable for all levels of hiking and climbing experience.
