The Byre, Banavie, Fort William, Inverness-shire

The Byre, Banavie, Fort William, Inverness-shire

The Byre in Banavie, near Fort William, is a charming self-catering holiday cottage that boasts one of the most breathtaking views in Britain. Set in a scenic setting, The Byre provides an ideal base for those seeking outdoor adventures such as climbing, walking, kayaking, skiing, and cycling, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat to relax and unwind.

The Byre is a detached holiday cottage, thoughtfully constructed on the site of the original byre. It has been designed with comfort in mind, featuring underfloor heating on the ground floor and radiators upstairs, all powered by an efficient air source heat pump, ensuring warmth throughout your stay.

The ground floor offers a spacious sitting and dining room, equipped with a 32″ TV, HD Freesat, DVD player, and video. The kitchen is well-equipped, providing all the modern conveniences of home, while a separate utility room offers additional space. A bathroom with a shower over the bath is also located on this level. The entire ground floor is tiled, with comfortable rugs placed in the sitting room for added warmth and comfort.

Upstairs, guests will find two twin bedrooms, one of which can be configured as a double. Both rooms feature south-facing dormer windows, allowing for plenty of natural light, with additional Velux windows on the north side. Should the need arise, an extra bed can be added to the bedrooms or the sitting room. The upper floor is fitted with pine flooring, complemented by rugs for added style and warmth.

The Byre is also designed with practicality in mind. A large heated hall and utility area provide ample space for drying outdoor gear, making it an excellent choice for walkers and adventurers. Guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the most spectacular side of Ben Nevis from the property, and direct access to traffic-free walking paths is an added benefit for nature lovers. Ample private parking is available, and for those who travel with bikes or skis, there is secure storage in the garage by arrangement.

Additional conveniences include free Wi-Fi and the option to charge electric vehicles using a type 2 untethered charging point, with costs based on usage. The Byre has been awarded a prestigious four-star grading by Visit Scotland and is part of their "Walkers Welcome" scheme, which affirms its suitability as an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts.

Banavie itself is steeped in history and has long been regarded as the perfect base for a Lochaber holiday. It offers some of the best views of Ben Nevis and was once the original starting point for climbers before the construction of the pony path and the establishment of the summit observatory in 1883. The village is also home to Neptune’s Staircase, the largest set of locks on the Caledonian Canal. Visitors can enjoy the sight of tall ships passing through the locks, alongside pleasure craft and fishing boats making their way to the western waters.

During the summer months, Banavie becomes a hub for railway enthusiasts, who gather by the canal bridge to capture the Jacobite steam train as it makes its daily journey to and from Mallaig. The combination of historic charm, natural beauty, and outdoor opportunities makes The Byre in Banavie a fantastic choice for a memorable Scottish holiday.

Lochside Follies offers stunning self catering accommodation at Ardslignish, a tiny hamlet midway between the villages of Salen and Kilchoan. The quirky properties all have stunning views over Loch Sunart and the Morven Hills beyond, making this a truly idyllic holiday destination.

Each of the four properties are unique, and all have something individual to offer.

All of the properties have access to a games room with snooker & table tennis. There is also a mini gym available. A basic 6 hole pitch and putt course can be enjoyed as well (golf clubs can be supplied).

Lochside Follies is the ideal base for exploring the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. A visit to the lighthouse and visitor centre (open April-October) is a must, especially on a windy day! The beaches at Sanna, Portuairk and Ardtoe are also great days out. North of Kilchoan is the base of a large volcano which erupted 60 million years ago.
