Blue Reef Cottages offer 2 luxury self catering cottages in the quaint Isle of Harris village of Scarista in the Western Isles. These award-winning, isolated and secluded cottages are totally private yet only 10 minutes’ walk from an award-winning restaurant and 20 minutes’ drive from shops and bars.

The one bedroomed self catering cottages are designed for couples looking for a luxury romantic break. Each cottage is equipped with bicycles, picnic backpacks, beach towels and a set of golf clubs.

Scarista is a typical crofting village on Harris. Situated on the west side of the island, it is surrounded by the Atlantic with spectacular scenery. The ever-changing climate compliments its beauty with the varying colours that can be seen along its shores. It is also home to the remotest links golf course in Britain.

Culturally, the Hebrides have a strong music and Gaelic tradition. The Gaelic language is still widely spoken and can be heard throughout the island.

The cottages are unique in their design as they are turf roofed and aesthetically blend into the hillside. The idea is based on Neolithic housing, which was situated underground. This idea, along with a touch of traditional Hebridean building techniques, has resulted in a unique design with exclusive features.

The cottages were the inspiration of local, award winning, architect Stuart Bagshaw. “Blue Reef Cottages was the first of what we now affectionately refer to as our ‘Hobbit Houses’."

Situated above the long sands of Scarista the concept behind this project was to lift the turf on the hill and slip a home underneath it. Retreating back into the hill it shelters itself from the prevailing Atlantic wind.

Inside is an open plan living space which is dominated by the large curved window exploiting views across the beach to the horizon of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Utilising local natural materials of stone and turf this house appears to grow out of the landscape.”  Sba architects 2002.

The area surrounding the cottages is ‘machair land’ which is sandy soil with a carpet of wild flowers during the spring and summer months.
