Off the Rails, Plockton, Ross-Shire, Scottish Highlands

Off the Rails – A Unique Self-Catering Experience in Plockton

Off the Rails is a self-catering holiday cottage set above the picturesque village of Plockton in the Scottish Highlands. This one-of-a-kind property offers a distinctive holiday experience that will delight the whole family and is especially appealing to train enthusiasts.

Accommodation

Originally built in 1887 on the renowned Inverness to Kyle line, Plockton remains a working but unmanned station. The station building has been beautifully refurbished, preserving its Victorian features and architecture while being fully updated with modern comforts such as complimentary Wi-Fi, smart TVs and a Blu-ray player.

Designed with guest comfort in mind, the accommodation combines character with practicality. The entire property is set on one level, making it ideal for those with limited mobility, and it can accommodate up to six people. Parking is conveniently located just outside the building, and there is an inviting outdoor patio area for relaxing in the fresh Highland air.

The Old Ticket Office now serves as the lounge, featuring the original pitch pine cladding, wooden floors and ceiling, and an authentic Victorian fireplace. Guests are provided with a basket of logs and coal to create a cosy atmosphere. The original ticket hatch remains intact, adding to the room’s charm. The lounge includes a smart TV, Blu-ray player, record player, a comfortable sofa bed, armchair, tub chair, bean bags and a footstool.

The Ladies Waiting Room has been transformed into a stylish bedroom with a quality king-size bed, bedside tables, smart TV, comfortable seating and fitted carpet. The former Gentleman’s Toilet has been converted into a luxurious en suite wet room complete with a sauna, cold drench shower, thermostatically controlled hot shower and underfloor heating.

The Gentlemen’s Waiting Room is now an open-plan country kitchen and dining area. Retaining its original pine cladding, wooden floors and ceiling, it exudes warmth and character. The modern kitchen features a large island unit with breakfast bar, induction hob, oven, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. A Victorian open-hearth fire adds a nostalgic glow, while the dining table provides the perfect setting for shared meals. A Robert’s radio with Bluetooth, along with shelves lined with books and magazines, ensures entertainment and relaxation.

The Station Master’s Office has been converted into another comfortable bedroom. Retaining its pine cladding and original fireplace, the room can be arranged as a king-size or twin (zip and link) with a luxurious mattress topper. It also includes a Smart TV, DVD player and hairdryer.

Outside, guests can enjoy the use of a BBQ — perfect for summer evenings spent admiring the views.
