Cwm Ffernol – A Peaceful 5-Star Farmhouse Retreat in Snowdonia

For those seeking a truly unique escape from the world, surrounded by peace, beauty and tranquility, Cwm Ffernol offers the perfect retreat. This traditional self-catering farmhouse sits in its own private valley amidst stunning natural surroundings, providing an idyllic setting for a relaxing family getaway. Rated 5 stars by Visit Wales, the property enjoys a convenient location just off the A493 between Gogarth and the village of Pennal.

Accommodation

Guests enter the farmhouse through a small hallway with a staircase leading upstairs. To the left lies the main lounge and dining area, while to the right is a second lounge, ideal as a children’s playroom or an additional relaxation space.

The main lounge is L-shaped and full of original character, featuring a large open stone fireplace with a multi-fuel stove, flanked by the original bread oven and salting hole. The room is furnished with two easy chairs and a comfortable leather suite, and includes a TV, DVD and VHS player for entertainment. The dining area, which accommodates up to six people, offers a welcoming space for shared meals.

The dining area flows into a spacious, well-equipped kitchen that includes everything needed for a comfortable stay: a washing machine, tumble dryer, Rayburn, electric hob and oven, toaster and kettle. A second dining table provides extra seating, and a back door opens onto a peaceful patio area with outdoor furniture – ideal for relaxing in the tranquil countryside.

The second lounge, located to the right of the property, is a cosy and inviting space designed with families in mind. It includes a sofa, armchair, gas fireplace, and entertainment options such as a TV, VHS and DVD player.

Upstairs, the accommodation features three bedrooms: one double room, one spacious twin room and a large master bedroom with a double bed. The family bathroom is generously sized and includes a bath, power shower, sink and WC. Well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional fee (maximum of two), though guests are advised to confirm pet arrangements in advance, as not all cottages on the property accept pets.

Exploring the Area

Nestled within the stunning Snowdonia National Park, Cwm Ffernol enjoys breathtaking views across the Dyfi Estuary and the Cambrian Mountains. The surrounding Dyfi Valley is recognised as Wales’ only new-style UNESCO Biosphere, offering a haven for nature lovers, walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Guests can enjoy scenic walks leading up to Pengarreg and the mystical Bearded Lake (Llyn Barfog) – a location steeped in Welsh legend, said to be where King Arthur defeated the water demon, the Afanc. The charming seaside village of Aberdyfi, with its golden sands and watersports, and the historic market town of Machynlleth, are both just a short drive away.

Nearby, the Dyfi Osprey Project and local RSPB reserves provide superb opportunities for birdwatching and spotting rare wildlife.

Cwm Ffernol combines traditional Welsh character with modern comfort, offering guests the chance to unwind, explore and reconnect with nature in one of the most beautiful parts of Mid Wales.
