Set in the peaceful hamlet of Esk Valley near Grosmont, the property overlooks the famous Heritage Steam Railway, offering guests the unforgettable experience of watching steam locomotives power up the line. Surrounded by open countryside made famous by the TV series Heartbeat, the cottage offers scenic views from every window and is a haven for local wildlife. With countryside walks from the doorstep and the heritage coastline—including the seaside town of Whitby—just a short drive away, it’s an ideal base for a relaxing rural getaway. The location is safe and tranquil, perfect for families with children.

Accommodation Highlights

Mallard Cottage comfortably sleeps four guests across two bedrooms, with additional space for two more on the lounge sofas. The master bedroom features a charming pine four-poster double bed and offers spectacular views of passing steam trains. A second bedroom includes full-size adult bunk beds, perfect for families or friends travelling together. The bathroom features a WC, vanity unit, and a shower over the bath.

The cosy lounge and dining area boasts exposed beams, a feature fireplace with an electric stove-style fire, two comfortable sofas, a dining table and chairs, and a TV with DVD player—ideal for relaxing after a day of exploring. The large kitchen is fully equipped with all the essential electric appliances for convenient self-catering.

Outside, a private garden provides panoramic countryside views and includes a sun house with comfortable seating—perfect for morning coffee or evening relaxation. Private parking is available directly behind the cottage.

Grosmont, once a bustling hub of ironstone mining in the 19th century, is now best known for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Hawthorns, Stiffkey, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk (Sleeps 1-8)

Hawthorns offers wonderful self catering accommodation just outside of the village of Stiffkey near the town of Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk. Whether you are a family, a group of friends or a couple, this holiday cottage will provide a comfortable and quiet base for a memorable escape.

This beautifully furnished cottage is furnished in a contemporary style and is brimming with lots of natural light. The cottage boasts amazing views of the open fields and garden, offering magical glimpses of the sea through the oak trees.

This charming cottage is spread over two floors and sleeps up to eight people in total. The ground floor has one bedroom with a zip and link bed which can be made as two single beds or one super-king bed, 1 twin room with 2 single beds and 1 double room. One of the bathrooms has a bath with a hand-held shower, whilst the other bedroom has a gorgeous walk-in shower.

On the ground floor, there is a spacious open plan kitchen/sitting/dining area which offers lovely views through the large windows and French doors. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need including a full-sized fridge/freezer, Miele washing machine, dishwasher, electric AEG oven, gas hob and microwave. Tuck into some delicious meals around the large oak dining table which seats 8 people.

The downstairs living area has very comfortable seating, a large smart TV, DVD player and French doors leading out onto the veranda where there is outdoor seating.

On the first floor, there is a further sitting room that has leather sofas, a TV and a DVD player. This is the perfect place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the kitchen area on the ground floor.

Hawthorns has its own large private garden providing a safe place for children to play. There is a patio where a large teak table and barbeque for al fresco dining, ideal for enjoying the breathtaking views.

At the front of the cottage is a veranda that faces west, perfect for evening drinks whilst watching the sun go down. A side gate leads from near the patio onto the path that runs down to the coast in one direction and to the village in the other.

There are many things to do in the local area, including enjoying some of the coastal walks where you can see a range of birds and wildlife. Guests can enjoy a range of other activities including cycling, sea fishing, horse riding, golf and much more. The villages of Morston and Blakeney both offer boat trips to visit Blakeney Point and the seal colony. There are also many stately homes and art galleries in the area that are well worth visiting during your self catering break
