Mungo’s Den is a unique and tranquil holiday retreat located in Portnalong, a peaceful and welcoming crofting hamlet on the north-west coast of the Isle of Skye. This characterful vintage property provides an ideal base for exploring the island’s many highlights, from the enchanting Fairy Pools and a visit to Talisker Distillery, to enjoying fresh local seafood from the nearby Oyster Shed.

Accommodation

Originally a telephone exchange and post office, Mungo’s Den has been carefully rescued and beautifully restored to create a stylish and distinctive holiday home. The property offers a calm and restful atmosphere, rich in character and charm, and has been rebuilt with strong environmental principles in mind. Recycled and reclaimed materials are used throughout, including a spiral staircase salvaged from a garden and lovingly restored.

The living area features underfloor heating, a cosy log burner, a comfortable sofa and a dining table, creating a warm and inviting space to relax. The kitchen continues the recycled theme, combining eclectic crockery with charming Victorian cupboard doors.

The bathroom includes a rolled-top bath and underfloor heating for added comfort. Sleeping accommodation is arranged across two levels, with a super king-size bed on the mezzanine level beneath Velux windows and a double bedroom on the first floor.

Guests have exclusive use of the entire property, along with a small seating area to the rear and convenient parking at the front. Mungo’s Den offers a vintage retreat that blends its historic past with modern comforts in a truly memorable setting.

Visiting Portnalong & Exploring the Isle of Skye

Portnalong and nearby Carbost are surrounded by some of Skye’s most breathtaking scenery, including views of the iconic Cuillin Mountains. Scenic beach walks can be enjoyed at Fiskavaig Bay, Talisker and Glen Brittle, while Talisker Distillery is just three miles away and offers guided tours. Excellent food and live music can be found at The Old Inn in Carbost, with renowned dining available at Loch Bay Restaurant, Edinbane Lodge and The Three Chimneys. Near Portnalong Pier, visitors can explore beautiful etchings and prints at Loch Harport Gallery, along with numerous other galleries in the surrounding area. In Portree, the Aros Centre hosts film screenings, performing arts, eagle cams, art exhibitions and a popular café and bistro.

Once an old telephone exchange and post office, Mungo's Den has been meticulously rescued and restored, offering a stylish holiday experience. The spiral staircase, rescued from a garden, has been lovingly restored.

The living room boasts warmed floors, a log burner, a comfortable sofa, and a dining table, continuing the recycled theme. The kitchen incorporates a blend of crockery and Victorian cupboard doors. The bathroom is equipped with a rolled-top bath and underfloor heating for added comfort, while the mezzanine level features a super king bed and Velux windows. The first-floor bedroom offers a double bed.

Mungo's Den in Portnalong offers truly unique self catering accommodation, nestled on the gorgeous Isle of Skye. This luxury retreat offers the ultimate honeymoon hideaway, set amongst beautiful scenery and wildlife.

This wonderful retreat offers a vintage eco-chic style, furnished to the highest standards to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Formerly an old telephone exchange and post office, the den has been thoughtfully restored with eclectic furnishings and outstanding facilities to create a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere. The den is great for adults or a couple looking to stay somewhere special.

A lovely living area is the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Curl up on the sumptuous sofa and stay toasty in front of the Morso Squirrel woodburning stove. Catch you favourite show on the Sony wide-screen TV which comes with Sky or watch a movie on the DVD player. Delightful features include lavish handmade curtains, underneath heating beneath the reclaimed slate floor and even a restored original bakelite telephone for you to make & receive calls.

Rustle up some wonderful home-cooked food in the bespoke, handcrafted kitchen which includes reclaimed Victorian doors. The kitchen is fully-equipped and includes a Villeroy & Boch Belfast sink, Neff appliances, an integrated fridge with freezer box and washer/dryer. You can enjoy the perfect start to the day with a good tea or coffee, with an Alessi kettle and Krups coffee machine provided. The authentic retro Roberts Radio is great for putting some tunes on while washing up.

On the ground floor, there is full-size bunkroom with superior natural handmade mattresses for a restful night’s sleep. The bedroom boasts crisp cotton quality bed linen & blankets, plus antique, vintage & designer cushions. A quirky bathroom blends decadent chic with modern touches to offer a peaceful and calming retreat. Soak away your troubles in the free-standing bath or wake up to a refreshing shower under the powerful over-bath shower. Fabulous facilities include a restored antique Victorian washstand, designer fittings and Villeroy & Boch porcelain throughout, as well as locally made organic soaps and fluffy towels.

A magnificent Victorian spiral staircase leads to the mezzanine floor which offers stunning views over Macleods Tables & Loch Harport. This space is great for relaxing with a good book on the comfy vintage Edwardian armchairs, with a tray of Fairtrade tea, coffee & hot chocolate also provided. On the other side of the room is an ultra-comfy super-king bed with a natural handmade mattress. The luxurious Siberian 100% pure goose down duvet, luxury sheets & king size pillows ensure a blissful night’s sleep.

Outside to the rear of the den is a secluded cafe table with chairs for al fresco dining when the sun is shining. A log store is also provided for firewood.
