The Old School House, Coryton, Okehampton, Devon

The Old School House, Coryton, Okehampton, Devon

The Old School House is an exceptional property that seamlessly blends country charm with refined interior design. Situated in a corner of Devon, this unique home offers an elegant getaway for families or groups, combining historic character with modern comforts. The property’s layout spans three interconnected sections: two historic wings and a contemporary addition, all thoughtfully designed to provide spacious and light-filled living.

The original Victorian wing includes a large drawing room, a welcoming space for relaxation or entertaining, complete with a piano. Above it, the master bedroom boasts an en-suite bathroom with both a shower and a bath, as well as ample room for a cot. The rear entrance features handmade terracotta tiles leading to a lavatory with an original hand basin and a practical laundry room.

The heart of the home is the beautifully equipped kitchen, set in the space that once served as the infants’ room. It features antique chairs, a carved walnut table, an Aga, a Miele induction top cooker, and a walk-in larder for additional storage. A hallway from another entrance leads to a butler’s pantry and a second drawing room in the new extension. This modern wing offers two bedrooms, one with an en-suite and the other served by a separate bathroom.

Upstairs, a bedroom with an open mezzanine overlooks the orchard, offering a peaceful spot to work or relax. Bathrooms throughout the property feature underfloor heating, and the powerful showers add a touch of indulgence. The home’s outdoor spaces are equally inviting, with a garden designed for dining, relaxing, and taking in dramatic sunset views over the valley. Open fires in both sitting rooms, one of which doubles as a music room, create cosy spaces perfect for unwinding.

In 2024, the Garden Rooms were added, located just 15 metres from the main house. This romantic addition includes two bedrooms and a bathroom, offering extra privacy or a special retreat for guests.

The Old School House is ideally located for exploring Devon’s hidden gems. Dartmoor, North Cornwall, and several historic towns are within easy reach, offering endless opportunities for discovery. Guests often comment on the property’s peaceful setting, the quality of sleep, and the stunning views from the garden.

Within an hour’s drive, visitors can explore National Trust treasures such as Cotehele, Castle Drogo, and Buckland Abbey, or venture to renowned attractions like the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. For coastal adventures, the charming towns of Fowey and St Mawes are delightful destinations. Closer to home, Olga Polizzi’s Hotel Endsleigh provides a luxurious spot for afternoon tea or cocktails with views over the River Tamar. The Dartmoor Inn at Lydford, just a 10-minute drive away, offers excellent dining, making it an ideal way to round off a day of walking on Dartmoor. For those seeking relaxation, the stream below Widgery Tor provides a serene and memorable escape.

The Old School House offers an exceptional combination of style, comfort, and location, making it the perfect base for exploring the beauty and history of Devon.

The Old School House, Carlecotes, Penistone, South Yorkshire, Peak District National Park

The Old School House is in a beautiful part of South Yorkshire in the pretty hamlet of Carlecotes. For those who want a relaxing break away, we are truly the ideal location. We are a comfortable and relaxing retreat on the northern edge of the Peak District National Park and just a short drive from Penistone & Sheffield.

A cosy holiday home for a couple or small family. It has been thoughtfully appointed to ensure it includes everything you need for an enjoyable break away.

On your arrival, you will find free-range eggs from next door, local farm milk, and tea and coffee. Once you’ve been given the cottage keys space is yours – we may not meet again until you leave, but we will always be available if you need suggestions for places to visit or to eat out during your stay.

Carlecotes is a peaceful hamlet to the north of the Park District National Park and this remote cottage enjoys an elevated position (at 1150′) with ever-changing open moorland views. On many days you can watch the weather as it approaches: drifting clouds and mists, starry nights. We are superbly located with easy access to the Trans Pennine Trail for walking and cycling. The nearest towns are Holmfirth and Penistone, a 10 minute drive away – the latter is also on the Trans Pennine Trail.

We’re ideally situated for those who want to enjoy the Pennine and Peak District countryside, yet close enough to major cities and towns to use as a base if you would like to explore the wider region. Barnsley, Stocksbridge, Huddersfield, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and York are all easily reached by car.
