The Old Millhouse, Dalkeith, Midlothian

The Old Millhouse is an exceptional getaway where heritage charm meets refined modern comfort. Set within 3.5 acres of private grounds in the scenic town of Dalkeith, just eight miles from Edinburgh, it offers a secluded and luxurious stay, with concierge support available if desired to make every visit seamless and personal.

Accommodation

Rich in history, the house was carefully restored in 2012, preserving its original character while introducing elegant contemporary touches. Arranged over four floors, the bedrooms are spread across the first to third levels and reached by the main staircase, while the ground floor is home to a range of welcoming spaces designed for relaxing and spending time together.

The light-filled Orangery, surrounded by windows on three sides, overlooks the gardens and provides a beautiful setting for dining and unwinding. A large oak table seats ten guests comfortably, while plush sofas and a remote-controlled fireplace add warmth and comfort. For a quieter atmosphere, the snug features leather armchairs, soft lighting and a bar area, making it ideal for a relaxed drink or an intimate gathering. Throughout the house, rich fabrics, including Indian silks, and the glow of a log fire add to the sense of understated luxury.

Each of the five bedrooms has its own individual style and is designed with comfort in mind. Guests can enjoy Hypnos wool and cashmere beds, feather and wool duvets, organic toiletries, bathrobes, soft towels and slippers.

  • The Millers Room (first floor) overlooks the garden and river and includes a super king bed, classic furnishings and an en-suite with a walk-in rain shower.

  • The Pentland (second floor) offers zip-and-link beds that can be arranged as twins or a super king, period details and an en-suite rain shower.

  • The Esk Master Suite (second floor) combines antique pieces with beautiful views and includes an en-suite with a roll-top bath, rain shower, bidet and underfloor heating.

  • The Dalkeith (third floor) features flexible twin or super king beds and an en-suite shower.

  • Toile de Jour (third floor) is inspired by French style, with a super king bed, antique décor and its own en-suite.

The grounds are beautifully maintained, offering a peaceful natural setting with gardens, woodland and the gentle presence of the River Esk. Guests can take part in yoga sessions, stroll through the woods, enjoy a game of croquet or simply relax outdoors with a book. The hot tub spa, complete with hydrotherapy jets, provides soothing relaxation, with robes, spa towels and flip-flops supplied for comfort before and after a soak.

Dining is part of the experience, whether guests are eating outside on the terrace in warmer weather or gathering indoors for drinks before and after meals. A private chef can also be arranged to prepare bespoke dishes tailored to individual tastes, adding a special touch to the stay.

The Old Millhouse brings together history, elegance and nature in a way that feels both luxurious and welcoming, with every detail thoughtfully considered. Gorton House & Cottages, Lasswade, Midlothian (Sleeps 1-33)

Gorton House & Cottages offers wonderful self catering accommodation in Lasswade, just outside of Scotland's fabulous capital of Edinburgh. All of our cottages are set within a walled garden next to Roslin Glen and enjoy stunning views towards the Pentland Hills.

Gorton House
A spacious five bedroom holiday house with all modern facilities which retains the character and features of the original 17th Century farmhouse and it’s Victorian extension. The master bedroom with its bay window framing the view over Roslin Glen is a favourite feature for guests, as are the grand staircase and the log burning stoves. The provision of a communicating (but soundproof) door at the end of the ground floor corridor means that Gorton House can be combined with the East Wing to allow flexible booking options for larger groups.

East House
The East house sleeps 6 in a double and two twin rooms. There is also a shower room and a bathroom. The house is equipped with modern facilities and retains its original character, dating from the early 17th Century. The ingle-nook fireplace in the sitting room houses a wood burning stove, perfect for keeping you toasty in the chillier months. The kitchen is well-equipped and a patio door opens onto a delightful garden area.

Stable Cottage
The first of our holiday cottages was created by the conversion of the former stables in the grounds of Gorton House. The views over Roslin Glen (a nature reserve on the banks of the River North Esk) towards the Pentland Hills are spectacular. As the conversion was extensive, (almost a complete rebuild) this holiday cottage enjoys modern standards of construction resulting in a very cosy premises but retaining the 17th Century look and feel. Sleeps 2 in a king room which has patio doors to the garden. The sitting room patio door looks directly onto fields and woods making Stable Cottage a favourite for wildlife enthusiasts. Flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi are available.

Orchard Cottages
These three Holiday Cottages were built to match the character of the nearby historic Gorton House. All have south-facing views into The Walled Garden and are named after the fruit trees are grown in the particular area in which they are situated. Each has its own spacious garden and private parking area. A short walk around Gorton grounds promises stunning views over Roslin Glen towards the Pentland Hills and surrounding countryside. Flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi are provided. All the cottages sleep 4 in a double and twin room.

Visiting Lasswade & Exploring Edinburgh
Edinburgh's famous Prince's Street and Edinburgh Castle is only a 20 minute drive away and the city provides all the attractions expected from Scotland's capital, yet within 5 miles of the rural setting of these holiday cottages are the sporting facilities of 8 golf courses, river and loch fishing, pony trekking, a dry ski slope and 3 leisure centres with swimming pools. The Penicuik to Dalkeith walk/cycle track passes the gates of Gorton House, while the Pentland Hills Regional Park provides the backdrop and is readily accessible. We are also ideally placed for the Scottish Golf Open just 20 minutes away by car. Further attractions to visit include:

Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect.
Kings Acre Golf Course.
Palace of Holyroodhouse.
National Museum of Scotland.
