Explore the Isle of Islay
Ballivicar Farm enjoys a peaceful yet convenient location—close to Port Ellen but secluded enough to offer privacy and quiet. The property is within 15 minutes of Islay’s main ferry terminal, the airport, and the island’s only golf course. In addition, three of Islay’s most famous working whisky distilleries are just a short drive away.

The surrounding coastline, beaches, and natural scenery are among the most unspoiled in Scotland, offering a timeless atmosphere of solitude and wonder. Birdlife and other rare wildlife are part of everyday life here, including barn owls nesting in the farm buildings, swallows, buzzards, hen harriers, and peregrine falcons. In winter, the area is home to impressive flocks of Greenland white-fronted and barnacle geese.

A Place Steeped in History and Peace
History lovers will find themselves surrounded by ancient landmarks, with Iron Age forts, standing stones, deserted townships, and Celtic crosses all within easy reach. But above all, Ballivicar Farm and the Isle of Islay offer visitors a healing, peaceful environment—free from pollution, stress, and crowds. Though often described as "remote," the island is in fact easily accessible, yet remains one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets.

With its welcoming hosts, natural beauty, rich wildlife, and proximity to local attractions, Ballivicar Farm Apartments provide an ideal escape for anyone seeking tranquillity and authenticity on the stunning Isle of Islay.

Ballivicar Farm Apartments, Port Ellen, Isle of Islay, Argyll, Bute & The Islands (Sleeps 1-6)

Ballivicar Farm Apartments offers self-catering accommodation that is situated in Port Ellen, Islay in Argyll, Bute & The Islands.

The 3 lovely self-catering and well-equipped apartments are called The Chougherie, The Hayloft and The Bothy. All apartments have Wi-Fi available. We are a working farm with sheep and 30 horses, 2 of which are Clydesdales. Visitors to the farm include deer, pheasants, birds of prey, owls and the odd hedgehog, geese mostly in winter, hares etc.

The Chougherie:
The Chougherie has two bedrooms (one double bed and one twin), a lounge/living area, an open plan kitchen and a separate bathroom.

The Hayloft:
The Hayloft has one bedroom (twin beds), a large living area, an open plan kitchen and en suite bathroom. We are happy to accept well-behaved dogs. Wi-Fi is available for our guests.

The Bothy:
The Bothy has one bedroom (twin beds), a living area, an open plan kitchen and en suite bathroom. Extra beds are available in The Chougherie and The Hayloft by arrangement. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Wi-Fi is available for our guests.

The farm is situated close to but quite separate from Port Ellen, it is within 15 minutes of Islay's principal ferry port, airport and its only golf course. The three most distinctive of Islay's six functioning distilleries are also within easy reach. The sea and empty beaches are, of course, ubiquitous on the island, which is, in many ways, locked in a time-warp (you rarely need to lock your car or your flat).

Wildlife, rare on the mainland, is part of everyday life, barn owls nest in the farm buildings, there are swallows everywhere (and bats), and since nothing is shot on the farm, pheasants, hares, roe deer (and some red) and rabbits abound. Buzzards are commonplace and hen harriers and peregrines are also part of everyday life. In the winter there are geese, Greenland white-fronts and barnacles in large numbers.

History surrounds the farm and island from iron-age forts, standing stones, deserted townships and celtic crosses, all within easy reach. But above all, Islay (and Ballivicar) is a healing place, a quiet, peaceful, unpolluted respite from an overcrowded world, 'remote', but in fact not remote at all, just a well-kept secret.

The Isle of Islay offers the visitor a peaceful and relaxing holiday with miles of beautiful beaches, magnificent bays on Islay's Atlantic west coast and stunning views.
