The history of Cockermouth dates back to Roman times and was established as a market town in the early thirteenth century. This Gem Town was also the birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth.

Cockermouth (or 'mouth of the Cocker') developed at the confluence of the Rivers Cocker and Derwent. The Cocker's name comes from the Celtic word "Kukrã" meaning the crooked one.
